Woodheads receive Excellence in Sustainability Award.

Derek McGrath & Mike Fellowes

Woodhead have been awarded the nationwide Babcock DynCorp Infrastructure Services BIS Excellence in Sustainability Award. An impressive achievement in only their first year of partnering with Babcock’s to deliver a wide range of MoD projects across the region.

On presenting the award, Mike Fellowes, Babcock Infrastructure Services Managing Director commented “It was very clear from their entry that Woodhead have made a real commitment to adopting a sustainable approach. This was evident in a number of key areas and was supported by a clear corporate commitment with stretching objectives.”

Award Winning Criteria

To win this award Woodhead’s had to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability in the following areas:

  • Transport and Managing Pollution
  • Maximising Energy Efficiency
  • Minimising Waste
  • Reduced Water Usage
  • Purchasing in an Environmentally Friendly Way
  • Education
  • Environmental Policy

Alongside this Woodhead’s were able to demonstrate their commitment to energy efficiency through initiatives such as the East Midlands Resource Efficiency Club of which Woodhead’s were founder members and their work with Wastecycle and Envirowise.

Re-think, Re-use, Recycle

Woodhead have demonstrated their ability to think “outside the box” in their attempts to be green and offer sustainable solutions. Use of mountain bikes to move between sites on one MoD project with Babcock DynCorp, is just one example of their common sense and practical thinking with regards to environmental issues.

Other measures have included the introduction of Structural Insulated Panels (SIP’s) to build a new office through their partner company K-Panels Ltd, based in Tuxford. This modern method of constructing buildings offers a highly insulated building, reducing the future energy use of the building whilst also reducing site waste.

The company has set targets to minimise waste going to landfill from sites. Any waste that is created on site is segregated into sections by type so that metal and wood waste can be recycled easily.

On other sites Woodhead have reused and recycled materials, including reusing existing ceiling and light fittings on one site.
